Oxygen Producer Galore
Did you know that marine algae produce more than 70% of the oxygen we breath and that you can actually observe it while diving?
We got to swim in a sea of oxygen bubbles on a sunny Wellington shore dive...!
Around the coast seaweed (macroalgae) is a highly productive ecosystem, fixing carbon by photosynthesis, building up biomass and producing oxygen as side product. Seagrass is similarly productive in our estuaries. However, most of the oxygen is produced on the vast surface of the open ocean by microscopic algae - phytoplankton. Got to #LoveSeaweed!
